Bishop Stephen personally endorsed a set of resources produced by the Salisbury Diocesan Board of Education. A book of children’s prayers and two resource packs were launched by Bishop Stephen during an assembly at Sarum St Paul’s on Friday 27th November.
Bishop Stephen said to the children and staff, “We’ve launched these resources in your school today because you clearly understand and value prayer. These resources will help you do that, and more besides.”
He added, “It’s so important to talk to God, saying I love you, I’m sorry, thank you and asking for things. It should be a part of all our lives, whatever age we are.”
The assembly included prayers read by two of the child authors, Chloe Trigwell and Tom Smith. Tom said afterwards, “Well that was different! I enjoyed reading the prayers out in front of the school.”
Headteacher Jenny Larsson said, “I thought that the message from the Bishop was wonderful. His presence really commands attention, and he’s obviously super with children. It’s been a wonderful occasion for us all.”
All three resources feature on the national Year of the Child 2009 website. They are the result of a year’s collaboration between Diocesan Children’s Adviser Barbara Meardon, Diocesan RE Adviser Derek Holloway, Diocesan Youth Adviser Claire Estall, and the Head of Education at Salisbury Cathedral, Sarah Rickett. Children and young people from across the Diocese were involved either as writers or in pilot days.
Contributions for the prayer book came in from children’s clubs, youth groups, Sunday schools and Church schools, including Sarum St Paul’s. Prayers from the school feature in the Church of England’s national Advent calendar.
