Spiritual, Moral, Social, Cultural

It's now widely accepted that the personal development of pupils spiritually, morally, socially and culturally, plays a significant part in their ability to learn and to achieve.

Salisbury Diocese considers this aspect of the curriculum particularly important in church schools because we start from the premise that ‘we're all made in the image of God’ and every child is of the utmost value as an individual.

A fully developed understanding of this is observed where opportunities for pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development are identified in all curriculum areas and effectively planned for.

The Diocese provides support for the development of the four areas outlined:

Spiritual

Pupils have the opportunity to seek out aspects of life which lead to an understanding of the ‘bigger questions’: who am I? What is important to me? What is my purpose? Where do I belong? What happens when I die? Exploration is supported by encountering faith and belief in their own life and in religious communities

Moral

Pupils are educated within a safe environment where they learn to develop as responsible members of a community. An understanding of basic ‘right and wrong’ is very much a part of their daily lives, as is a sense of justice and forgiveness.

Social

Pupils thrive in a motivated and encouraging school. They learn to work together, support each other and take collective responsibility as a member of their community, just as in a family. A strong sense of caring for others is often a hallmark of a good school.

Cultural

Pupils live in a vast world of extensive cultures and traditions, even within their own community. It is important to develop an enjoyment of such variety through knowledge and experience. Schools encourage pupils’ skills of interaction which promote harmony and respect, dispelling prejudice and discrimination.

Salisbury Diocese is dedicated to the Every Child Matters Agenda and supports schools in its outcomes through training and advice
